What is the Traveling Gavel? How can your chapter collect the “Traveling Gavel”?
For years, Jaycee chapter members from across the state have traveled to other chapters’ meetings and events to “capture” the coveted “Traveling Gavel”. The Traveling Gavel is a very LARGE GAVEL. Each member of a chapter that travels to the chapter holding the Traveling Gavel earns “Traveling Gavel Miles” for their chapter, which earns them points for the Traveling Gavel Trophy. The chapter with the most Traveling Gavel miles for the year, earns the trophy at the Year End Convention. This is a fun way to meet people from across the state, see their meetings, help with their events, and get new ideas. The Chapter with the most membership growth in a year earns the right to start the year out with the Traveling Gavel in their chapter.
Rules: Chapters can only receive travel credit for one visit per month to each chapter in the state. They receive “Traveling Gavel” credit for visiting the chapter with the Gavel and collecting the Gavel. They can visit new chapters twice a month (chapters that are less than 15 months old). Chapters that are visiting must have a paper signed from President or Project Chair of visited chapter, with signatures of all visiting members. A copy of this paper needs to be forwarded to the state president to receive travel credit. Visiting Chapters must respectfully contact chapter president to set up visit. More than one chapter may attend a meeting or event to collect the gavel. The chapter in attendance with the most miles gets the gavel. Miles are figured by totaling the number of people from their home chapter and multiplying by the number of miles traveled from their home meeting site to the chapter event site they are visiting. State officers do not count toward Traveling miles. If a chapter collects the Gavel, the chapter they collected it from can not attend the next meeting or event to collect it back, they must sit out 1 meeting or event before trying to collect it back again.
